Under the hood, every platform in this category is the same three systems in a trench coat: a large language model generating the conversation, an image model generating the pictures, and a memory layer trying to keep the character consistent between the two. The chat runs on a language model tuned for roleplay. That tuning is why the personality feels vivid in the first hour — and why long conversations drift: the model's working memory is a sliding window, and once your early messages fall out of it, the character genuinely doesn't know what you told it unless the memory layer saved a summary. Candy AI's memory layer is serviceable but shallow; expect the character to lose specifics from sessions past.

Images come from a separate diffusion model, prompted behind the scenes with your character's stored appearance plus your request. This is why image generation costs tokens on top of the subscription — GPU time for image models is the single biggest real cost these platforms carry — and why the character occasionally comes back with a slightly different face: text and image systems only stay in sync as well as the platform's internal prompting keeps them.

The pattern to understand before entering card details: companion platforms advertise the annual-billing monthly rate, which is typically around half the true month-to-month price. On top of the subscription sits a token wallet — images, voice minutes, and premium features draw it down, and refills cost real money. A subscriber who chats daily and requests images regularly should expect the effective monthly cost to land well above the sticker price.

The character builder produces a companion whose pictures look like the same person across requests more reliably than most rivals, and the interface never makes you feel the machinery. The weaknesses cluster in conversation depth. Against the best chat-focused rivals, Candy AI's characters are prettier but shallower: memory is shorter, replies in long sessions lean on safe generic warmth, and steering the personality takes more effort.
