Checking server

PNG, JPEG or WebP. Up to 8 MB. Images are deleted within the hour.

Remove image backgrounds on your own machine

The live demo runs on one small server, so it goes offline sometimes. rembg, the open-source tool behind it, runs fine on a normal laptop CPU. Download one script, run one command, and every cutout stays on your computer.

What you need

Python
Version 3.10 or newer. Get it from python.org if you don't have it.
Hardware
CPU only. No graphics card needed.
Disk space
About 176 MB for the model, plus the Python packages.
Internet
Only for the first run, to install the packages and fetch the model.
Tested on
Windows 11 with Python 3.13. Written for Windows, Mac and Linux, but only run on Windows so far.
Download setup_remove_background.py
  1. Install Python

Skip this if you already have Python 3.10 or newer. Check with the command below, and install it from python.org if the command fails. On Mac and Linux the command may be python3.

    python --version
  2. Download the script

Use the button above and save the file in a folder next to the photos you want to cut out.

  3. Run one command

Open a terminal in that folder and pass your photo. The first run installs rembg into a private environment and downloads the model, so give it a few minutes. Later runs start straight away.

    python setup_remove_background.py photo.jpg
  4. Get your cutout

The result is a transparent PNG saved next to the original as photo-cutout.png. Pass several files to cut them all in one go.

    python setup_remove_background.py a.jpg b.png

What rembg does, and where it stops

rembg is an open-source Python tool that removes the background from a photo and returns a PNG with a transparent cutout. The script uses its u2net model, which runs on a plain CPU with no graphics card.

It works best on a clear subject against a background that differs from it, like a product on a table or a person against a wall. Hair, fur, glass and busy backgrounds are where cutouts get rough. For those, cut the image out first and clean up the edges by hand in an editor.

Nothing leaves your machine. After the first run the model is cached on disk, so later cutouts do not need the internet. The hosted demo limits uploads to 8 MB. The script sets no limit of its own, so the ceiling is your computer's memory.

Common questions

Is this background remover really free?
Yes. rembg is open source and the script installs it for free. There is no account, no watermark and no credit limit.
Does it upload my photos anywhere?
No. The script installs rembg into a private folder in your home directory (genlovers-tools/remove-background) and processes files locally. Only the install and the first model download use the internet.
How do I remove the background from many images at once?
Pass every file name to the same command, for example python setup_remove_background.py a.jpg b.png. Each result is saved next to its original as name-cutout.png.
Why does the first run take so long?
It creates a private Python environment, installs rembg and its dependencies, then downloads the roughly 176 MB u2net model. That happens once. Later runs skip all of it.
How do I uninstall it?
Delete the genlovers-tools/remove-background folder in your home directory. The model file is stored separately in a .u2net folder in the same place.
