What Reddit actually recommends instead of Character.AI

The short answer

Three names dominate and they are not interchangeable: Janitor AI for the fastest free landing, SillyTavern for the people who stayed happy six months later, and Chub for character cards. Everything else in these threads is a long tail of small sites that appear once and vanish.

How we gathered this

We searched Reddit for the alternatives question in six different phrasings, collected 26 threads from 2024 through early 2026, and counted which platform names recurred across independent threads rather than within any single one. We then installed and used the three most recurrent. We are citing thread titles and links, not comment quotes: vote counts and comment attribution were not verifiable at the time of writing, and inventing them would be worse than omitting them.

What the community says

The default recommendation, on two grounds: the character library is close enough to Character.AI's that your bot probably already exists there, and it costs nothing. The counter-current is just as consistent. Weak memory, and characters that turn sexual within a handful of messages regardless of the scene you set up, are the two complaints that recur almost as often as the recommendation itself. One thread title in our set is literally a user asking for alternatives to Janitor because "the memory is pretty weak".

Our read

Both halves are right, which is why it belongs first on the list and not at the top of it. It is the correct place to start and a poor place to stop. Go in knowing you will attach your own API key within a week, because the built-in model is the weakest part of the experience.

SillyTavern

Dominant in the follow-up threads, near-absent in the first-timer ones

What the community says

This is the most interesting pattern in the data. SillyTavern barely appears when someone asks "what should I try instead of Character.AI", and it dominates when someone asks "what are you still using". r/SillyTavernAI is full of migration posts with titles like "the tough decision" and "is it worth moving", and the answers skew heavily toward yes plus a warning about the first evening.

Our read

The recurrence gap is the finding. It is not the tool people recommend to beginners and it is the tool people are still running months later, which tells you the learning curve is real and the payoff is too. If you have configured anything more complicated than a router, the afternoon is worth it.

Chub AI (Venus)

Consistently third, often mentioned alongside SillyTavern rather than instead of it

What the community says

Positioned as the card library rather than the chat app. Its lorebook feature comes up specifically in the memory threads, because it feeds world detail into context only when relevant instead of front-loading everything.

Our read

The pairing pattern is the tell: people mention Chub and SillyTavern together because they use Chub for cards and SillyTavern for chatting. If you read it as a competitor to Janitor you will be mildly disappointed; if you read it as a card source you will get what people actually like about it.

Nomi and Kindroid

Cluster together in the memory-specific threads, rare elsewhere

What the community says

They appear almost exclusively when the question is about long-term memory rather than filtering. That is a meaningfully different question and the threads treat it as one.

Our read

Worth noticing what this split reveals. Roughly half the people leaving Character.AI want an unfiltered roleplay sandbox and half want something that remembers them next month. If you are in the second group, most of the advice aimed at the first group will make you unhappy, and vice versa.

The long tail

Dozens of names, each in one or two threads, rarely repeated

Every alternatives thread carries several small platform names that do not appear in any other thread. Some are genuine enthusiasm for small sites. Some read like promotion.

Our read

Treat single-thread appearances as noise. A platform that solves this problem well gets recommended by strangers repeatedly across unrelated threads over months, and the three names above clear that bar while the long tail does not. This is the main reason to read a synthesis rather than one thread: a single thread cannot distinguish a good recommendation from an enthusiastic one.

The subreddit names are the finding

Before any specific recommendation, notice where these conversations happen. r/CharacterAIrunaways. r/CharacterAIrevolution. r/CAIRevolution. r/JanitorAI_Refuges.

Runaways. Revolution. Refuges. Communities do not name themselves that over a feature request. Those names encode a migration, and they are the reason this query has the volume it does: a large group of people left a product they were attached to and went looking for somewhere else, publicly, over a period of years.

It also explains the shape of the advice. These are not neutral review communities. They are ex-users, and ex-users over-index on the specific thing that drove them out. A thread full of people who left over filtering will recommend whatever is least filtered, even when the person asking actually has a memory problem. Read the question behind the question before you take the recommendation.

How we would decide, in one paragraph

Start on Janitor AI tonight because it costs nothing and takes ten minutes, and use it to find out which problem you actually have. If the filtering was the issue, you are done and you can stop reading. If you get to message thirty and it has forgotten your character's name, the problem is context management and no amount of platform-hopping fixes it: go to SillyTavern and spend the afternoon. If what you actually wanted was something that remembers you next month rather than a roleplay engine, neither of those is right and you want Nomi or Kindroid.
